Baker Triumphs in Playoffs to Retain MCB Tour Championship Title
Peter Baker won the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius after a thrilling sudden-death playoff against Simon Griffiths. Both English golfers had tied at 16 under par after the main rounds at Constance Belle Mare Plage, leading to extra holes where they continued to perform well. After matching birdies on the first two playoff holes, Baker secured the win on the third by successfully shooting from a bunker.
Despite feeling unwell before his second round, Baker managed to defend the title he won last year. However, he didn’t earn enough points to retain the John Jacobs Trophy, which instead went to Adilson da Silva from Brazil. Meanwhile, Simon Griffiths received the Barry Lane Rookie of the Year award for his performance.
During the tournament, Baker scored steadily, with highlights including a series of birdies across the front and back nine. Griffiths also played impressively, especially on the front half of the course where he made several birdies.
Colin Montgomerie, who had won this event previously, didn’t make a significant impact this time, finishing at four under par after some ups and downs during the rounds.
South African Keith Horne briefly surged into contention with an excellent start to his final round, but a double-bogey mid-round hindered his progress, and he ended up just outside the top contenders.
