Scottie Scheffler To Skip Season’s Opening Event Due to Christmas Dinner Injury

Season’s Opening Event Due to Christmas Dinner Injury

Scottie Scheffler, the reigning PGA TOUR Player of the Year for the past three consecutive years, has encountered a setback that will delay his 2025 season debut. Scheffler sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass while preparing dinner on Christmas Day, according to his manager Blake Smith. The incident, which led to surgery to remove small glass fragments, will sideline him for three to four weeks, necessitating his withdrawal from the upcoming Sentry Tournament.

The Sentry Tournament, the PGA TOUR’s season opener set for January 2-5 at Kapalua Resort in Maui, Hawaii, will proceed without one of its brightest stars. Scheffler is also expected to miss the Sony Open in Hawaii, the season’s second event. His return is anticipated at The American Express tournament, scheduled for January 16-19 in La Quinta, California.

Scheffler’s 2024 was a landmark year in golf, marked by his historic run of nine worldwide wins, including seven on the PGA TOUR. Highlights of his year included repeat victories at the Masters and THE PLAYERS, an Olympic gold medal, and a win at the TOUR Championship that secured his first FedExCup title. His success also included victories at four Signature Events: the Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament, and the Travelers Championship.

This string of achievements made Scheffler the first golfer since Tiger Woods (2005-07) to clinch PGA TOUR Player of the Year honors three times in a row. Additionally, Scheffler ended the year ranked No. 1 globally, a position he maintained throughout 2024, echoing Tiger Woods’ 2009 feat.

Despite the setback, Scheffler’s dominance in the sport remains undiminished, as evidenced by his six-shot triumph at Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge in December, where he debuted and succeeded with a new “claw” putting grip. His continued success and resilience underscore a career that is not only on a historic trajectory but also resilient in the face of unforeseen challenges. The golf world eagerly awaits his return to the green.
