Men and women set for grandstand finish in Sweden

Men and women set for grandstand finish in Sweden
Round Three Report

The inaugural Scandinavian Mixed Hosted by Henrik & Annika is set for a grandstand finish with two men and two women tied for the lead after 54 holes at Vallda Golf and Country Club.

The week started with 78 men and 78 women competing over the same course for the same trophy in a European Tour first and with 18 holes to go, it was still honours even between the sexes in the battle for victory and a place in the history books.

Overnight leader Caroline Hedwall fired a 73 to get to 12 under alongside fellow Ladies European Tour player Alice Hewson, who birdied three of her last four holes in a 69.

The duo joined Welshman Rhys Enoch and Australian Jason Scrivener at the top, after the early starting duo had taken advantage of the slightly calmer conditions on a very windy day to card a pair of 66s.

Home favourite Hedwall started the day with a one shot lead and while she twice extended that advantage to two despite a bogey bogey start, a double bogey on the 17th left the event wide open. Meanwhile, Hewson will also have the chance to become the European Tour’s first female winner and the Englishwoman was taking it all in her stride.

Scrivener is seventh in the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex after a career best second at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and the 32-year-old is joined by Enoch at the top of the leaderboard both chasing a maiden European Tour victory

English pair Ashley Chesters and James Morrison, Scott David Drysdale, Australian Scott Hend and Spaniard Adrian Otaegui were then at 11 under, with 26 players within five shots of the lead. Local favourite and tournament host Henrik Stenson sits at four under par.

Player Quotes

Jason Scrivener: “To be honest at the start of the day I would have taken a round of even par as well but I got off to a nice start, fed off yesterday’s round and just kept it going.

“Just enjoy the opportunity I think, I love the golf course and I’m starting to get a handle on it, so another good opportunity to win a golf tournament. Need to stay aggressive. My game has really come around, I feel like I am fairly sharp, so stay aggressive and keep making some birdies.

“It’s been great. It has been really cool to compete against the girls and hopefully the guys can come out on top.”

Caroline Hedwall: “It was extremely tough. It was almost a shock when I hit the first tee shot how much the end was actually blowing, but I think I adjusted really well and played really good golf. It’s just unfortunate at the end there that I couldn’t get the putts to roll in.

“No, I didn’t feel any pressure. It is tough conditions and anything can happen. I think I handled it really well and I had a bad start but fought back and I’m really proud of myself for keeping on fighting. I’m quite happy 73 is not a bad score in these conditions, but with the finish that I had I’m not that happy right now. It feels good to still be up there and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

“That is awesome that it is two men and two women at the top. They have obviously set it up really well for us. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow, I think it will be a fun and exciting day.”

Alice Hewson: “It was a lot of fun out there! It was really really tough, it has been windy all day and I got off to a bit of a slow start, so I’m really happy.

“I am having a lot of fun this week. That is something I have really worked on for the beginning of this season. Me and my caddie have a great time out there, we really try to crack jokes all day and focus on not taking the negatives from the shots.

“In windy conditions like this, it is really easy to focus on the negatives whether it’s a bad bounce or the wind takes it a little bit more. That was my biggest focus today, I did really enjoy it and playing with the men has been so much and they have all made me feel exceptionally welcome.”

Rhys Enoch: “Funnily enough I had six in my head to start the day but obviously I didn’t know how windy it was going to be and when we got on the tenth tee this morning I thought, just keep making pars and keep yourself in the tournament.

“I think once you got it going, you were never trying to push, even when you have 12 footers you are aware of the speed, and just sort of kept it easy. I think more of the same tomorrow, I learnt a bit today about how I have been playing and I try a bit too hard sometimes. On days like this when you have to swing free, it just shows what’s there and I just need to go out there with the same attitude tomorrow.”
