Maverick McNealy wins his first PGA Tour at the RSM Classic
Maverick McNealy wins his first PGA Tour at the RSM Classic. Held at Sea Island Golf Club in Georgia, the 29-year-old celebrated an emotional win by sinking a crucial birdie on the final hole.
A former top amateur, McNealy turned professional after leaving Stanford and quickly became a rising star. However, his journey as a full-time pro over the last five years was filled with close calls, including two runner-up finishes and one third-place finish. This week, he finally broke through.
McNealy started the tournament with an outstanding eight-under-par 62, putting himself in prime position early. By the final round, he was tied for the lead at 14 under and maintained a narrow advantage through the front nine. But a bogey on the 14th hole threatened his chances, and the competition heated up.
Nico Echavarria surged with birdies on holes 11, 13, and 15, while 21-year-old amateur Luke Clanton delivered a fist-pumping birdie on the 16th to join him at the top of the leaderboard. However, both stumbled on the final hole. Echavarria made his only bogey of the day, and Clanton failed to save par from a greenside bunker, leaving them tied at 15 under.
With the door open, McNealy and Daniel Berger, his playing partner, entered the final stretch tied for the lead. After both missed birdie chances on earlier holes, the decisive moment came on the 18th. Berger’s approach shot landed 21 feet from the hole, but McNealy delivered under pressure, hitting him to just over five feet. When Berger missed his birdie putt, McNealy calmly rolled in to seal the victory at 16 under.
“It felt like I’d been here before,” McNealy said, reflecting on the winning moment. “I’ve imagined this situation so many times, and it played out just the way I’d hoped.”
