Lucas Glover Among Nine Players Qualifying for the Masters Based on Year-End Rankings

Lucas Glover Among Nine Players

In a significant update to the Masters tournament, Lucas Glover clinched the 50th spot in the year’s final Official World Golf Ranking, ensuring his participation in the prestigious event. The ranking cutoff has led to the addition of nine new players to the Masters, expanding the eligible participant list to 85 compared to last year’s 77.

The Masters maintains a tradition of a compact field, preferring to keep participant numbers under 100 to preserve a unique playing experience. Notably, the field last exceeded this number in 1966. As per tradition, the top 50 players in the world at the end of the year, along with the top 50 from a ranking published shortly before the tournament, are invited.

Among the newly qualified is Tom Kim, who, sitting at 21st in the rankings, was the highest-ranked player not previously invited. Other qualifiers through the global ranking include Nick Dunlap, Max Greyserman, Rasmus Hojgaard, Jason Day, Corey Conners, Denny McCarthy, and Min Woo Lee, marking another entry for McCarthy and Lee based on year-end rankings.

The PGA Tour’s 2024 calendar year format has packed the schedule with significant events, including the Olympics, affecting player participation in late-year tournaments. Further invitations to the Masters will be issued to winners of PGA Tour events that award full FedEx Cup points, the Latin America Amateur Championship winner, and those in the top 50 global rankings as of March 31.

Augusta National also reserves the right to extend special invitations; last year, these were given to notable players such as Joaquín Niemann and Thorbjorn Olesen for their international play.

Regrettably, Nicolai Hojgaard missed the top 50 after a final-round 76 at last year’s Masters and his appearance in the 2023 Ryder Cup. His brother, Rasmus Hojgaard, however, will make his debut at the April tournament, adding another layer of intrigue to the event.
