Hideki Matsuyama Takes One Shot Lead Over
The Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua has already delivered its share of drama and top-tier golf, as players from last year’s PGA TOUR winners took full advantage of the prime scoring conditions in Maui. Hideki Matsuyama, showcasing a masterclass in precision, led the field with an impressive 8-under 65, sitting comfortably at 16-under 130 after a bogey-free round that featured a run of seven birdies across ten holes.
Close on Matsuyama’s heels, Collin Morikawa demonstrated why he is no stranger to Kapalua’s challenges. Morikawa, known for his calm approach, ignited his round with five consecutive birdies late in the day, matching Matsuyama’s score of 65 to tighten the leaderboard gap. This marked Morikawa’s eighth score of 65 or better at Kapalua since his debut in 2020, underscoring his adeptness at this course.
The tournament’s competitive spirit was further heightened by notable finishes from Corey Conners of Canada and Thomas Detry of Belgium, both positioned just two shots behind Matsuyama. Conners’ round was highlighted by a 40-foot eagle putt, while Detry accelerated his score with an eagle on the 14th, driving the green and nearly adding another on the 18th.
With the field averaging a score of 68.1, the course proved to be fertile ground for low scores, except for a few outliers like Davis Riley, who posted the season’s first 80. The majority of players, however, capitalized on the mild conditions to secure birdies and even eagles, as seen with Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley who also carded a 64 highlighted by an eagle on the last hole.
