Golfer Vows to Return Despite Losing Vision
Australian golfer Jeffrey Guan has tragically lost sight in his left eye after being hit by a ball during a pro-am tournament in New South Wales last month. The accident occurred just a week after the 20-year-old achieved a lifelong goal by debuting on the PGA Tour, making the unexpected injury all the more devastating.
Guan initially underwent surgery in New South Wales, followed by a second operation in Sydney, where he spent two weeks in intensive care. Despite the efforts of medical teams, specialists have since informed him that regaining vision in his left eye is highly unlikely.
Speaking about the experience, Guan reflected on the life-altering moment: “The instant ringing and pain rushed to my head, and I dropped to the ground.” After hitting a shot from the fairway and turning to place his club in the bag, the ball struck him in a moment that changed everything.
Undeterred by the prognosis, Guan remains focused on returning to the sport he loves. “As a kid, I always had a lot of perseverance and persistence,” he wrote. “I will continue to work hard and do my best to achieve my dream. I will be back.”
A two-time Australian junior amateur champion, Guan joins a legacy of players such as Adam Scott and Jason Day, who have used the junior title as a launchpad to golfing success. Recently, he signed with the sports agency Sportfive, aligning himself with some of the sport’s top talent, including Jon Rahm.
