Dominate in Team Cup After Round Two
Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) are on the verge of a resounding victory in the prestigious Team Cup at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, needing just two more points from Sunday’s 10 singles matches to reverse their defeat from two years ago. GB&I showcased their strength, securing 7.5 points out of 10 in two sessions of five foursomes contests.
Despite a minor setback where team leader Justin Rose and his partner Aaron Rai faced defeat, the team maintained strong momentum. Rose and Rai were overpowered 4&2 by the formidable French pair, Matthieu Pavon and Romain Langasque, marking GB&I’s sole loss in the Saturday afternoon matches.
The highlight of the tournament was the performance of rising star Tom McKibbin. The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland, eyed by the breakaway LIV circuit, demonstrated his prowess by maintaining a 100% winning streak. Alongside Matthew Jordan, McKibbin edged out a narrow victory over Thorbjorn Olesen and Niklas Norgaard, clinching their match with a series of spectacular birdies on the back nine.
Veteran player Tyrrell Hatton, another LIV prospect, alongside Matt Wallace, contributed significantly with a 3&2 victory over the Danish duo of Rasmus Hojgaard and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen. Hatton’s performance was stellar, scoring two and a half points out of three.
Despite their strong position, Paul Waring, a DP World Tour veteran, emphasized that the trophy is still up for grabs. Waring, who scored victories with different partners across Saturday’s matches, stressed the importance of maintaining focus and delivering peak performances in the upcoming singles matches.
The team’s robust performance continued from the first day, where they doubled their lead in the morning session. A standout moment was Hatton’s dramatic 65-foot eagle putt on the last hole to secure a half against Olesen and Norgaard, a duo that had been leading by two after 10 holes.
Justin Rose’s skillful play also shone brightly as he and Tommy Fleetwood clinched a crucial win against Continental Europe’s captain Francesco Molinari and Julien Guerrier, pushing GB&I further ahead.

With the team poised for a commanding finish, their collective efforts not only promise a potential trophy but also the attention of Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, who has been observing the matches closely. The final day of singles is anticipated to be a showcase of individual skill and team spirit, as GB&I aims to secure the victory they have so convincingly outlined over the weekend.
