Billy Horschel wins BMW PGA Championship 2024
Billy Horschel claimed victory at the BMW PGA Championship in a thrilling three-man playoff, defeating Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence at Wentworth on Sunday. Horschel took home the winner’s prize of $1.53 million after all three players finished at 20-under par.
In the first playoff at the event in 11 years, Lawrence was the first to stumble, finding water on the 18th hole and bogeying out of contention. This left McIlroy and Horschel to battle for the title. Despite McIlroy’s birdie at the 18th, Horschel held his nerve and sank a spectacular eagle putt to become the first American to win the event twice, following his 2021 victory.
“I’m thrilled and excited about how I played, but at the same time, a bit disappointed for Rory,” Horschel said. “He’s a good friend and a generational talent. He’s been so close this year.”
Lawrence, who started five shots off the lead, mounted a fierce challenge with seven birdies in the final round, including a remarkable 26-foot putt on the 16th.
